I may be a woman, but I’m a doctor

I attended a local leadership training with Julie Beck (given to all Manhattan Stake & Ward leadership personnel) a few months back.   She mentioned some of her experiences with women in other countries.  When I read the following statement from N. Kristoff’s recent NYT column, I had a reaffirmation of the significant role women play in their respective communities.

“We are trying an experiment,” she told me. “We women in Somalia are trying to be leaders in our community.”

I think it’s always a nice exercise to ask ourselves “what have I done for society?”

Reminds me of a more-than-slogan from the U.S. anti-slavery movement
“Am I not a Woman and a Sister?”
Introduced by Elizabeth Margaret Chandler, with the image of a chained, kneeling , suppliant female slave, it expressed the vulnerability and the humanity of female slaves. Miss Chandler, of a Quaker family, an orphan at 9, became a writer and activist. She died of “remittant fever” shortly before her 27th birthday.
